Edward Burtynsky is one of Canada’s most internationally acclaimed photographers.
He is well-known for his captivating, and curiously beautiful, large-scale photographs documenting the ramifications of industrial production on nature.
The recipient of many prestigious international awards, Burtynsky creates photographs of human-inflicted environmental catastrophes that are hauntingly beautiful. As such, he often sets up a strange dichotomy of attraction and repulsion in his photographs.
This piece is an aerial photograph of Lake Lefroy in Western Australia, from the artist's "Mining" series.
With this highly-abstract image and its painterly composition, the viewer is left with a sense of unease after a further inquiry into what is being depicted.
It is a paradigm of this dialogue between beauty and devastation that is at the center of his photographic output.
His work is represented in over 50 museum collections around the world ranging from The National Gallery of Canada, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, to Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Bibliothèque National, Paris.
