"Americana" is a major and consistent theme in Robert Rauschenberg's oeuvre.

The artist embraces it, expounds on it, subverts it and dissects it. 

Not surprisingly political elements frequently appear in his practice.

In 1972 during his failed Presidential election campaign  George McGovern attracted a tremendous number of celebrity endorsements

The art world also rallied behind McGovern. 

Robert Rauschenberg was one of a number of artists who created work to support McGovern's campaign.

This lithograph is a fantastic example of Rauschenberg's politically minded aesthetic.
