Alphonse Mucha’s decorative panel of Sarah Bernhardt as Mélissinde in Edmond Rostand's play "La Princesse Lointaine" (Distant Princess). Published in Art et Décoration in 1900 by Albert Lévy / La Librairie centrale des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
Mucha’s fortune changed forever when he was given the near-impossible task of designing the poster for Sarah Bernhardt’s new play, Gismonda, within two days. On New Year’s Day of 1895, his art poster depicting her in full costume regalia decorated the streets of Paris, bringing him praise and recognition for his contributions to the world of the poster and securing him a loyal champion in Bernhardt.
Frame dimensions: 11 7/8 x 15 7/8 inches. This piece is presented professionally framed using all archival materials including a silk mat and gold fillet. This work arrives accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Notable museum collections featuring works by Alphonse Mucha include: Musée d'Orsay, Paris; Louvre Museum Graphic Art Database, Paris; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Mucha Museum, Prague, Czech Republic; and more.
