Lawrence Weiner (b. 1942) is one of the most-distinctive American conceptual artists.
His philosophy and aesthetic developed concurrently to Sol LeWitt yet Weiner has focused far more on (text-based) installation - typically in public spaces.
Exhibited at Leo Castelli during the 1970's, Weiner has been an institutional darling with major exhibitions at most of the world's top museums.
As a significant portion of his output is temporary installation, his multiples (which are few and far between) are sought-after and cherished by collectors.
This rare silkscreen was published in conjunction with Weiner's solo exhibition "SPHERES OF INFLUENCE" held in 1991 at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), London. Weiner recognized the value of this work as a functional promotional tool and a work of art unto itself. It not only advertised the exhibition, but was also included in the installation on display. An entire wall in the main exhibition hall was covered edge to edge with this design.
The central motif shows two sets of black parallel lines bisecting an ovoid (oval) form with a green rhombus marking the point of convergence. This was also the signature image of Weiner's ICA exhibition and has since reappeared elsewhere in his oeuvre.
"Spheres of Influence" exemplifies Weiner's precise and clean style along with one of the most distinctive elements in his multiples - cut outs! The four pie-shaped segments within the oval and the rectangular bar above the text "ICA London" are die cut. Depending on the matting, the filled-in colors of these shapes can be changed.
Caviar20 has been a long-time fan of Lawrence Weiner - as anyone interested in Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger can see the traces of his influence on their work.
